FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions about the Tappan Zee High School Library : This list of FAQ's was developed by 9th grade students following their 2-day orientation in the library.
Is there any way to know if the library has a book while I’m at home?
Yes, you can click on the link to OPALS from the library website and see if the book is in the system and its call number.
Are there any e-books available from the library?
Yes, you can find them using the Follett Shelf or Ebsco.
What is ABC-CLIO and how can I get on to it?
ABC-CLIO is a history database. To get on to ABC-CLIO, click on the link from the home screen of the library website. The username and password are both “tzhs”.
Can you eat or drink in the library?
Yes, but please make sure you clean up completely.
Do students need a pass to come to the library?
Yes, underclassmen need a pass from study hall, or a library lunch pass.
Seniors with privileges can choose to come to the library but must remain there the entire period. If they arrive after the bell, they need a pass.
How can we access e-books from the library?
Use the Follett Shelf. You can browse our collection using the username: tzhs and the password: student
To check out a book, use your computer sign in credentials. You can read our e-books from any device by downloading a free application called Follett Enlight for Apple products or droids.
How many books are in the library?
We have approximately 10,000 books, and another 2,000 non-book items (such as DVD’s, playaways, audiobooks, etc).
What are the library’s hours?
The library is usually open from 7:30 AM until 3:30 PM. Sometimes the library is being used after school for meetings or special events and in that case the library is closed.
Where can I get the school newspaper?
We keep copies of the newspaper on the circulation desk and near the entrance to the library.
How many books can you take out?
There is no limit. If you have overdue books you will not be able to take out any books until you return the overdue book(s).
What is Easybib?
Easybib is a program that helps you create correct citations. The high school subscribes to the Easybib Pro Edition which offers other features, such as citing in different styles (APA and Turabian/Chicago), notetaking and outlining. It also offers a feature to teach students how to determine if a source is credible or reliable. All students can have access to the Pro Edition by putting in the coupon code: tappanzee
Can students volunteer to work in the library during free periods or before or after school?
Yes, many students volunteer for community service credits or honor society points.
What is the borrowing period for a book?
2 weeks, but books can be renewed unless there is a waiting period.
What are the best databases for Social Studies?
ABC-CLIO has a suite of databases that includes: Ancient World History which covers pre-history to the Middle Ages; Modern World History, which covers the Renaissance to the present time. We also have Issues, Daily Life Through History, The World at War, American History AND American Government. Other great databases for current events are CQ Researcher and Gale’s Controversial Issues in Context.
What are the different genres in the library?
We have just about every genre including science fiction, fantasy, graphic novels, mysteries, true crime, thrillers, horror, and romance, which are all in the Fiction area. Then we have our nonfiction section and a separate section for biography, autobiography and memoir.
Where can I find the passwords for the websites?
Go to the More tab… click on Tappan Zee High School Students Only and you will see the usernames and passwords for all of our databases listed in alphabetical order?
Can I order a book?
Yes, if the Tappan Zee High School does not have a book you would like, the librarian will locate it at one of the public libraries. The librarian is also open to suggestions for purchase.
What classification system is used in the library?
We use the Dewey Decimal Classification System for our non-fiction books.
What is OPALS?
OPALS stands for Online Public Access Library System and it is our library catalog which lists all of the materials available at the library. You can use this system 24/7 on any computer.
What is the librarian’s name?
The library media specialist is Ms. Lois Parker-Hennion.
What is the teaching assistant's name?
Ms. McGee is the teaching assistant working in the library.
Are there textbooks in the library?
Yes, we have at least one copy of every textbook used at our school. They are located right across from the circulation desk on the low bookcase between the two pillars.
Does the library have encyclopedias?
Yes, we have online encyclopedias (World Book, Grolier, Funk and Wagnalls) and many specialized print encyclopedias.
What magazines does the library subscribe to?
View this list to see the magazines we subscribe to. In addition we get Ms. Magazine and Extra.
Can you take out magazines?
Yes, you can borrow our older magazines, but unless you have a special circumstance we do not lend out the most current issue.
Does the library have any videos?
Yes, in addition to the educational videos found through the Discovery Education Website and Vital New York (PBS), the library has a collection of approximately 750 DVDs. You can find out what we have by checking OPALS.
