DO SOME PRELIMINARY READING ON YOUR TOPIC - SEARCH - Use OPALS for books. We have books on many topics that could be considered for this project, including specialized encyclopedias: Encyclopedia of Genocide; Human Rights Reference Guide, etc. Our General Encyclopedias can also be helpful… World Book, Grolier, Funk and Wagnalls
Current Events Topics– use CQ Researcher (browse topics)
Use ABC-CLIO database – check all of the modules but especially Issues and Pop Culture (In the Issues Module, click on Issues for a list of possible topics)
Another great database for current events topics is Gale. This is a periodical database. Select the modules that make sense for your interests. Browse subjects and look at subdivisions. Use the advanced search mode and search by subject!
Our newest database is Ebsco and it also has some great features.
Your keywords – Develop a keyword bank and include alternative spellings if necessary.
By combining these words in your search, you can zero in on the topic.
GATHER AND RECORD POSSIBLE SOURCES:
Select some preliminary resources and skim the article or sections of the book on your topic. Remember to use the table of contents and the index. Record these sources, as you will certain bibliographic information for your Works Cited. Most of the databases provide the citation for you. You can also use easybib.com. But remember you must make sure the citation is accurate (don’t blame easybib if it's wrong).
