Dear GW... It would be helpful if you identified yourself (former student, parent, local resident?) as the blog was created specifically for me to share what I'm reading with high school students (and for them to share their reading too!) But it is always good to hear from anyone on the blog! I also wonder why you are only now responding to a blog post from last summer. I'm sorry if the books I read and recommend do not meet your standards, but please keep in mind that we are serving a population of students in grades 9-12 (that is 13-18 year-olds). Much of what I read and recommend is YA literature, that is literature geared specifically to young adults. Getting students to read anything outside the curriculum is a challenge. While I agree that the Hunger Games is not "great literature", it is popular with young people and many wanted to read the book prior to seeing the movie. We had a riveting book discussion group around the series, where issues of politics, feminism, character development, and the differences between book and film came up. You will note that our reading lists contain links to a wide variety of reading material. Please feel free to write to me at [email protected] if you'd like to let me know who you are and if you would like to discuss this further.
