It's great to be able to read what you want. Watch this video on students who avoid reading the assigned books, but love reading books of their choice! Task: Did you know that many teenagers stop reading in high school? Here are some statistics: *70% of middle school students say they read more than 10 books per year compared with 49% of high school students. ( National Education Association Press statement, March 2, 2001) * Less than one third of 13-year-olds are daily readers, a 14% decline from 20 years earlier. Among 17-year-olds the percentage of non-readers doubled over a 20 year period from 9% in 1984 to 19% in 2004 (from the US Dept. of Educational - National Cetner for Education Statistics) *On Average, Americans ages 15-21 spend almost two hours a day watching TV and only seven minutes of their daily leisure time on reading (US Dept. of Labor Statistics, American Time Use Survey 2006
What can we do? Can book trailers created by students encourage their peers to start reading? We will put book trailers in our OPALS catalog and QR codes on our books and displays to encourage reading. Let's get Tappan Zee High School Students Reading!

If the book a book has a google icon, you can read a portion of the book right online. A few of our books have book trailers you can watch online (some made by last year's 10H classes)!!! Some of our books have QR codes and you can watch book trailers on your device!
Check NOVELIST to find a book you want to read. You can put in various criteria to focus your search. Then read book reviews, discussions, and even portions of the book online to see if you like it.
